T-Systems is to use ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) to transmit all the races at the Ski World Cup in Italy for ARD, ZDF and the Swiss broadcasting corporation SRG SSR idee suisse (DRS, TSR, TSI). In the process, all data will be transported for the first time digitally: the data will reach the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) in Bormio from the cameras positioned on the downhill slopes via optical fiber and from there to the broadcasting studios via ATM. This will provide broadcasters with needle-sharp pictures and extremely good sound quality.
T-Systems also offers other services based on ATM technology, such as backward channels for video and sound as well as telephony. In addition, editors can access applications in their corporate network and the Internet.
T-Systems installed a new ATM link for SRG SSR idee suisse in Zurich at the end of 2004. The Swiss broadcaster therefore has the opportunity to use T-Systems’ International Broadcast Service. Thomas Meier, Head of SRG SSR idée suisse’s Network Operations (Media Services), says: "The T-Systems solution offers us the flexibility required for our diverse transmission needs and maximum security for future studio formats and interfaces. Aside from the winter sport reports, we can reach over 360 broadcasters worldwide via this ATM network in order to exchange programs. In addition, our editors will obtain secure access to video, sound and data services within our corporate network".
T-Systems ATM Broadcast Services offers broadband, scalable audio and video broadcasts featuring automatic dial-in and IP services. In addition to traditional transmission formats, ATM Broadcast terminal equipment can also be individually configured to enable transmission of state-of-the-art standards like DVB-ASI, SDI, MXF and IMX. T-Systems configures and monitors all terminal equipment worldwide from its network management center. In the process, the redundant network concept ensures maximum data and transmission security.
